Mulago hospital  is set to construct a modern  Maternal and Neonatal Unit to prevent the death children and mothers at the facility .

The project  to be funded by the Islamic Development Bank was approved by  the parliament last year with the aim of improving the health of mothers in the country.

“The number of women giving birth at the hands of qualified health personnel is expected to increases a result of this unit. This will help curb the maternal and infant mortality rate that stands at 435 maternal deaths per 1000 live births and 76 deaths per 1,000 respectively”, Committee Chairperson Hon. Mbagadhi Nkayi told Parliament last year.

On Wednesday,Mulago hospital officials together with  those from the Ministry of Health presented the lay out of the modern  facility  and they announced that actual construction will be starting soon  . Officials from the Islamic Development Bank also attended the event .

When completed, the multi-purpose unit will handle reproductive cases, counselling services and domestic violence.

President Museveni made the commitment to construct a modern maternal and neo-natal health care unit during the reading of this year’s budget, saying it would facilitate access by women to specialised health services.
