Former junior Health Minister, Mike Mukula was found guilty of embezzling Gavi funds and was sent to serve a four year jail term.
Mukula was accused of embezzling sh253m from the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) account. He was found guilty of the charges despite claiming he returned sh210m to the Central Bank while the remaining money, sh54m he claimed was asked for by the First Lady, Janet Museveni and her secretary, Margaret Karabo signed for the money which she received.
Appearing before the Anti Corruption Court, Mukula was sentenced by Judge Irene Akankwansa. He is set to begin his jail term today. Present at the court were musician, Bebe Cool, Dr. Alex Beinomugisha, among others.
Earlier on, Mukula had denied the charges saying he returned the money to the Central Bank.
