Paul Okwera aged 42, a resident of Ogom village, Pader district  appeared before the Gulu High court judge  today to answer charges of aggravated defilement against a minor of 14 years, who was suffering from nodding disease.

The trial  presided over by the Lira Resident judge, Justice Byamukama Mugenyi.

The court heard that Okwera on 19th July 2012 ambushed the minor suffering from nodding syndrome on the way and had sexual intercourse with her in a bush.

The girl reported the matter to her relatives and Okwera was arrested and taken  to Lacek –Ocot Atanga police post in Pader district.

Okwera who is dumb through his sign language interpreter, Janet Acan pleaded not guilty and told court that the victim went to his house and he directed them the way to their place.

Okwera also told court that he has never thought of having a girlfriend in his life.

Justice Byamukama Mugenyi adjourned the case to 6th February 2013 for further hearing but remanded Okwera back to Gulu main Prison.

Over 10 victims of the nodding syndrome in Pader district were defiled and 6 impregnated in 2012.
