Makerere University Chancellor has lamented that the public university is understaffed calling upon government to lift a ban on recruitment which has been in force at the university for quite a long time.
Chancellor Prof. Mondo Kagonyera while addressing the 63rd graduation ceremony at the Freedom Square on Monday revealed that the university is operating with less than 50% staff structure.
Kagonyera said that the few staff members can not handle the increasing number of students at the university adding that this has affected the quality of output .
He asked the ministries of finance and education to increase funding for Makerere in the next financial such that more staff can be recruited.
Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof. Ddumba Ssentamu reechoed the same dilemma at the public university stating that the total number of academic staff at Makerere has remained at 1400 for six years .
