A 90 year man in Saudi Arabiya has married a 15 year old girl from Jizan a province of Saudi Arabiya sparking condemnation from Human rights activists in the region .
The unnamed wealthy octogenarian has gone ahead to demand his dowry back after his bride reportedly ran back to her parents home.
The groom told Al-Hayat newspaper that he suspected the groom and her parents had set out to swindle him of his money.
“I feel that there is a conspiracy by her mother against me,” he said. “I will go to court tomorrow and demand that her parents give me back my money.”
In an interview with the Al Arabiya news channel, the elderly groom said his marriage was “legal and correct” and noted he paid the girl’s parents a $17,500 dowry.
The elderly man added that on their first night together, his new bride locked him out of their bedroom. Family friends said the teen was scared on her wedding night and locked herself in the room for two straight days before fleeing to her parents’ home.
Campaigners in Saudi Arabia have called on the authorities to intervene to ensure the girl is not returned to the man’s home.
Saudi National Association for Human Rights member Suhaila Zein al-Abedin urged authorities to get involved, according to Al Arabiya.
Abedin said marriage in Islam must be based on mutual consent and the girl’s behavior indicates she was not satisfied with the arrangement.
