Makerere’s Acting Vice Chancellor Venansius Baryamureba was yesterday eliminated from the Vice Chancellor’s race .It came as a shock to many basing to his earlier presentations which the other members in the race had boycotted citing lack of fairness in the process and fear over his influence in the University Senate committee. They had also demanded that he steps down but it never happened until the committee eliminated him on Thursday.
Three professors Ddumba Sentamu, Barnabas Nawangwe and Edward Kirumira were instead selected after secret ballot which has so far been criticized . Baryamureba was the fourth after voting .The three professors are now to be forwarded to the University Council, which will then forward two names to the Chancellor, Prof Mondo Kagonyera, to pick Makerere University’s vice chancellor.
Why Baryamureba was eliminated
Though Baryamureba has been hailed for the abrupt transformation of the university ,especially in the area of efficiency at the university ,sources at the university say that the committee made a decision to give a fresh start of Makerere university by electing a fresh VC who is not involved in the bickering that has been going on at the university.Baryamureba having been in the centre of the wrangles could not survive disqualification .His elimination was done indirectly done through a ballot where it was automatic that his rivals would vote against him.
Elly Rwakishaya Katunguka too was disqualified earlier than Baryamureba from the vice chancellor race on Tuesday and it is clear that his involvement in the rows at the university could not hold him in the race.
The voting council now believe that the elected Vice chancellor will be neutral and restore cohesion and harmony at the university.
