Makerere University is most known for strikes which are held by both the staff and the lecturers.

Lecturers of Kyambogo University have vowed to strike come 20th August 2012 a decision which was reached upon yesterday in a meeting at the University.

The meeting chaired by Kyambogo University Academic Staff Association Chairperson, Dr. Charles Twesigye resolved that come 20th August, the university staff including administrative and lecturers were going to go on strike.

The university staff was complaining against the general welfare at the university which is imposed upon them. They complained of the low allowances which are granted to them compared to those paid to those in other public universities.

For example, Makerere University pays sh2m per month in allowances in addition to the sh1.2m. The strike is slated to take place a week after the students arrive for the new semester.

They claim that despite new rates being approved by the university council, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ndiede Erisa is blocking them from acquiring what they claim is rightfully theirs.

In addition, they accuse the University of supporting their capacity building programs, but denying them opportunities for job promotions.

As a former student of Kyambogo i surely support the decision made by the lecturers. Indeed the welfare is at stake. Actually students’ welfare too should be looked to suppress any more demonstrations.
