Fake and substandard sausages have got into the Ugandan Market.Most of the fake sausages identified are reportedly made from offals mixed with little meat and sold along roadsides while some get into supermarkets.
An official from Fresh Cuts , the major leading producer of sausages in Uganda made a call to Uganda manufactures association this week and made the revelation to the body about the existence of fake sausages in the market.
Stephen Duyck made the remarks while taking a delegation from the Uganda Manufacturer’s Association (UMA) on a tour of his factory.
Duyck said a recent analysis by Chemiphar Laboratories on two sausage processing companies showed that the fake sausages contain E.coli and salmonella bacteria.“E.coli causes diarrhea, headache, nausea and vomiting, while salmonella is associated with typhoid,” he explained.
UMA boss Sebagala Kigozi said he will engage the Uganda National Bureau of Standards over required standards in sausage processing.
