A man is facing charges of hurting the religious feeling of people after questioning the origin of holy catholic water.

There is miraculous water flowing from the bottom of Christ’s statue in Our Lady of Velankanni Church in Mumbai, India but Sanal Edamaruku did not believe the water was miraculous so he started asking what the origin of the water was.

In response to his questioning remarks, two Catholic laity organizations filed a case against him for “deliberately hurting religious feelings and attempting malicious acts intended to outrage the religious sentiments of any class or community,” as stated in Section 295A of the Indian penal code.

People have been going to the area in question hoping to take the water and get healed but Edamarku was not pleased about it. He started talking against the people’s beliefs casting doubts in the believers by telling them the water was not religious at all. Edamarku said the water isn’t ”holy” and it could actually pose a danger the health of the people because it comes from a clogged drainage system.

Edamaruku is founder and president of Rationalist International, president of the Indian Rationalist Association, and an honorary associate of the UK Rationalist Association. He was called in to investigate the source of the water and reported the water oozing out from under the statue isn’t miraculous. Edamaruku even documented his visit to provide evidence in court.

He went on to add that he regrets nothing in intervening in the beliefs of the people because all he wanted to do was help them open their eyes to reality and be more rational in understanding the things around them.
