POLICE in Gulu are holding a 73-year old traditional healer, Gard Okello in connection to drug Abuse and operating without a license. The case file number is CRB 1418/2012.
Police said Okello was arrested having some plants that he proclaims to be herbs for treating victims of the killer Nodding Disease.
The speaker of Gulu District Local council, Douglas Peter Oka warned the people suffering from the nodding disease not to get any drug from unauthorized person.
Okello was on Friday morning was arrested by police from a tip off by Santo Okello, the head teacher of Aromo-wang-Lobo Primary school, Odek Sub-County, Omoro County in Gulu District.
Okello, the school headmaster is resident at the area said that the accused had reportedly administered some undisclosed dose of the local herbs to at least six unnamed children between the age bracket of six and 13 years.
“I was informed that a herbalist was administering local herbs to pupils some school pupils without my permission”, said Okello.
Okello revealed at least 164 out of 800 pupils in the school were reportedly suffering from the nodding disease, but was still pending confirmation by government’s ministry of health.
The Gulu officer in-charge of criminal investigations department, John Bosco Ozelle said police did not find the self-styled herbalist with any documentation on him. He said Okello only identified himself as a resident of Ujama village, Adyel Division in Lira municipality.
Ozelle also said that Okello was operating unlawfully.
