The team of physicists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva announced on Wednesday that they have found a new particle in the mass region around 125-126 GeV (gigaelectronvolt, a unit of energy equal to billion electron volts), which could be the long-sought-after Higgs particle, commonly referred to as the “God Particle” because it may be what gives all matter in the universe its size and shape.
The Scientists say that what the Higgs Boson does is to create a field of virtual particles that pop in and out of existence, and while they are in existence those virtual particles provide mass to other particle.
“We have reached a milestone in our understanding of nature,” CERN director general Rolf Heuer said in a CERN press release. “The discovery of a particle consistent with the Higgs boson opens the way to more detailed studies, requiring larger statistics, which will pin down the new particle’s properties, and is likely to shed light on other mysteries of our universe.”
Physicists said Thursday the potential discovery of the “God particle” is a gateway to a new era that could see humanity unlock some of the universe’s great mysteries including dark matter.
The particle was suggested in 1964 by six physicists – including University of Edinburgh physicist Peter Higgs, the particle’s namesake – as a way to explain mass.
The finding of the God’s particle was unveiled in great cheers via video link from Geneva at a landmark conference attended by hundreds of the field’s top experts.“We have a discovery. We should state it. We have a discovery! We have observed a new particle consistent with a Higgs boson.” CERN Director-General Rolf-Dieter Heuer said
Else where in Israel ,there were parties by scientists who were exited over the discovery.
The particle explains how particles clumped together to form stars, planets and even life. According to the theory, without the Higgs particle, the particles that make up the universe would have remained a primordial soup.
In particle physics, bosons are one of the two fundamental classes of subatomic particles, the other being fermions.
The Higgs boson is the final building block that has been missing from the “Standard Model,” which describes the structure of matter in the universe.The Press release said
So is it true that the without the Higgs boson God’s particle we would not exist?
CERN however noted the results presented this week are labeled preliminary, and are based on data collected in 2011 and 2012, with the 2012 data still under analysis.
