Several people are missing while 24 have been confirmed  dead after a Tanzanian Ferry carrying over 290 people capsized off the coast of Zanzibar.

The ferry  which was carrying 251 adults, 31 children and six crew got an accident at around 0930 GMT,Saidi Shabaani, an official in the second vice president’s office, said

The accident took place off Kwale Island, just a few kilometres (miles) from the coast of the main Zanzibar island, according to an employee at another nearby island, Chumbe, that is home to a private reserve and an eco lodge.

“The rescue operations are continuing… 124 people have already been found alive and we hope that others will be saved,” Tanzania’s Interior Minister Emmanuel Nchimbi said.

The families of the dead and missing were milling around on the waterfront wailing, the AFP reporter said. Crowds were trying to surge past police barricades to get closer to the water.

It was the second such ferry disaster in Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania, in less than a year.
