Members of parliament on the Legal Affairs Committee yesterday pinned the electoral commission boss ,Eng Badru Kiggundu to give accountability of the funds he used in all the recent by-elections conducted across the country.
Members of the committee who included the Luwero district MP Brenda Nabukenya (DP) Grace Namara MP Lyantonde (NRM) Baka Mugabi Bukooli North also NRM among others put engineer Kiggundu to task to tell the committee how much the electoral commission used in all the recent by-elections.
The electoral commission chairman told MPs that in all the six by-elections conducted by the electoral commission, shs1.4703 billion was spent in different districts .
Kigundu told the committee that the funds were spent as follows:
Luwero district – shs536m
Entebbe district – shs183m
Bukoto south (Rwengo district) – shs168m
Jinja district – shs161m
Busiro North- shs251
Kigundu added that the electoral commission needs money to prepare for other two by-elections in Kasese and Usuk County. He also told the legislators about the electoral commission emerging issues during the 2012/13 financial year.
Engineer Kiggundu said that EC is planning for the 2015/16 general elections as a project in the medium term, provision for voting in the Diaspora, institutions engaged in administration of elections and correctional centers, elections of the youth committees in the newly created administration units in the country.
Eng Kiggundu told MPs that EC is facing a challenge of the national ID project.
