The Dark Knight Rises has topped the box office earning $61m.
It earned the money at the US and Canadian theaters and ever since its debut on July 20th, it has so far earned $122m from international markets and $248 from overseas.
In total, Dark Knight Rises earned $537m from international markets, over seas and ticket sales.
Breaking down the amount earned, it managed to scoop $64.1m at the US and Canadian theaters, $122.1m from international markets, $248.2m from over seas and $289m from domestic ticket sales.
Dark Knight Rises cost $250m in production and more in marketing it. It was final in the Batman trilogy starring Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, among others. It was directed by Christopher Nolan.
With this record, it ranks as one of the year’s highest paid movies and it is believed that the sales were lesser than expected because of the Aurora Colorado shooting which over shadowed its grand opening.
“It’s been a double dose of things,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Hollywood.com Box Office. “The Olympics has been dominating media coverage lately and probably kept a lot of people home Friday night, and then there’s the Aurora shooting. There will be a bit more distance from the Aurora shooting, the Olympics will become routine, and there’s some really exciting films coming out,” Dergarabedian said.
According to Hollywood.com Box Office, overall domestic ticket sales for the weekend came in 25% lower than the same weekend one year ago.
