Uganda Prisons service has submitted a list of over 1000 prisoners who will be pardoned in October as Uganda marks 50 years of independence.
Prisons spokesperson Frank Baine says Uganda Prisons holds over 32,067 prisoners in 227 prison units across the country.
The pardon of some of the prisoners will be part of the activities during independence celebrations in October.
The Minister of Internal Affairs Hillary Onek said yesterday that the ministry has received 1,000 names for pardon.
Article 121 of the Constitution of Uganda gives the president the power to release prisoners or a person who has committed an offense or substitute a hard punishment with an easy one.
