Three professors have applied for the Makerere University Vice Chancellor job and are to contend for the seat.
The three applicants are the acting Vice Chancellor, Venansius Baryamureeba, Edward Kirumira and Tonny Oyana.
New guidelines were set for the new VC at the university. He or she must at the very least be an associate professor, have “considerable” administrative and management experience, and must be aged between 40 and 60 years.
He/she must have taught in a reputable university, supervised at least a good number of graduate students and should have the capacity to get university grants. In addition, the vice-chancellor must have international recognition.
Acting VC, Baryamureeba has so far done the university proud and despite his being involved in fraud scandals, he still has the favor of most of the students at the university.
Among those who where expected to apply were Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba, head of Postgraduate studies Prof. Eli Katunguka, former head of academic staff Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba, and Prof. Edward Kirumira. However, from the four, only two have been able to confirm their application.
Makerere University Vice Chancellor is appointed by the Chancellor on the recommendation of the University Council which elects representatives to the Search Committee.
