Liverpool football club is mourning the death of their former player Miki Roque.
Miki Roque was a member of their FA Youth Cup-winning team in 2006 but later joined Barcelona from where he has died.
Roque was diagnosed with pelvic cancer after a routine check-up on a back problem in March last year. He underwent surgery to remove a tumour in his pelvis a few months back.
He had trained with Barcelona’s B team last season as he began his recovery but passed away yesterday.
Barca star Andres Iniesta wrote on Twitter: “Very sad news. I want to send a big hug and lots of support for the family of Miki Roque. We’ll miss you.”
A Liverpool FC statement read: “Liverpool Football Club was today saddened to hear news that former player Miki Roque has lost his battle with cancer aged 23.
“Everyone at Liverpool Football Club would like to send their thoughts to Miki’s family at this sad time.”
Former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez tweeted: “I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the family of my former player Miki Roque, it is a tragedy to lose such a good boy so young.”
