60 people believed to be illegal Somali migrants drowned in Lake Malawi on Monday, police said
The boat t they were traveling in capsized along Kapolo in Karonga district due to overloading.Eye witnesses said the boat was loaded with many goods yet many people were on board.
Northern Region police spokeswoman Norah Chimwala say 47 bodies have been recovered so far and no survivors have been reported yet.
A BBC correspondent in Malawi said Malawi has become a key staging post for migrants fleeing drought and conflict in Somalia and Ethiopia trying to reach South Africa.
In March this year,Malawi police arrested over 70 Ethiopians and Somalis for illegally entering the country.
