1. Makerere University
Makerere University was established in 1922 .It is one of the oldest and most prestigious Universities in Africa. Makerere University offers day, evening and external study programmes to a student body of about 30,000 undergraduates and 3,000 postgraduates (both Ugandan and foreign).
Makerere University is also a very active centre for research; it is also active in collaboration in research with local and foreign Universities. In July 2011 Makerere became a Collegiate University, consisting of 8 colleges and 2 schools, operating as semi-autonomous units of the University.
In May 2007 Makerere University established a Directorate of Quality Assurance unit charged with the responsibility of providing leadership in prescribing, controlling and implementing quality standards at Makerere University.
Makerere University is located on Makerere Hill, less than a kilometer from the city Centre and regarded the best University in Uganda.
2. Kyambogo University (KYU)
Kyambogo University (KYU) is Uganda’s third public university established by the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 and the Universities and Other Tertiary institutions. It is a merger of the former Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK), the Institute of Teacher Education, Kyambogo (ITEK), and the Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE).
Kyambogo University offers high quality University Education in a stimulating environment. It has a research strategy focuses critically on the most intellectually and practically applicable areas. Such a dynamic approach is geared at creating teachers, engineers, community development specialists, managers and other professionals. It is located 8 km from the centre of Kampala City.It is one of the good universities in Uganda.
3. Mbarara University of Science & Technology (MUST)
Mbarara University of Science & Technology is located in Western Uganda on the banks of the scenic Rwizi River in Mbarara Municipality. Rwizi a tributary of Lake Victoria. MUST was established in 1989 following a statute of the National Resistance Council, the then legislative body in Uganda.
Mbarara University of Science & Technology has three Faculties; Medicine, Science and Development Studies and two Institutes, Computer Science and Tropical Forest Conservation.
The university is recognized by National Council for Higher Education in Uganda. With acclaimed national and international recognition for best practices in outreach and community relations from Association of Commonwealth Universities, European Union, Civil Society of Uganda, produces the best development workers and health care professionals.It is a good university, especially to aid one pursue a science course in Uganda.
4. Victoria University (VUU)
Victoria University Uganda (VUU) is a university established in 2011 in Uganda. It is one of the newest universities in Uganda; it offers high quality programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. VUU is affiliated with Scotland’s Colleges, a Scottish Government agency that markets academic programes for Universities in Scotland.
The university’s campus is on Kira Road, in Kampala, Uganda’s capital .and largest city. It offers course like; Business and Management, Business and Management with Information Systems, Accounting and Finance, Computing, The Faculty of Nursing and Health Sciences offers undergraduate programmes in Nursing Science and Public Health. The Faculty has state of the art equipment.
5. Uganda Christian University (UCU)
UCU was founded in 1997 by decision of the Anglican Church of Uganda from its premier theological seminary/college Bishop Tucker Theological College, founded in 1913 and named after the pioneer missionary bishop Alfred Tucker.
Uganda Christian University has programmes like theology, education, social work, business, law, mass communication, development studies, information technology, and nursing. It has innovated a number of modular courses in education, counseling, organizational leadership, maternal health and health administration.
UCU was the first affiliate of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities CCCU from Africa. In 2004, the CCCU and UCU initiated a Uganda Studies Program for students from North American colleges to spend a semester at UCU.
It is located in the town of Mukono approximately 26 kilometers (16 mi), by road, east of Uganda’s capital city, Kampala on the Kampala-Jinja Highway.
6. Kampala International University (KIU)
Kampala International University was founded in 2001.KIU has its main campus in Kansanga, southeastern part of Kampala Uganda’s. It has a second campus is located in Ishaka in Bushenyi district IN western Uganda.
7. Makerere University Business School (MUBS)
MUBS is the leading institution in providing business and management education at the certificate, diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels and a benchmark for other institutions both nationally and regionally. It was originally a business coarse branch of Makerere University but was later identified as an independent University.
The school’s campus is located at 118 Portbell Road, in Nakawa, a section of Kampala capital City.
8. Nkumba University (NU)
Nkumba University is one of the largest private universities in East Africa. It was granted a Charter by the Government of Uganda in 2006. The University is a non-profit, non-denominational institution providing an enabling environment for students to achieve competence, creativity, confidence and character
9. Gulu University (GU)
Gulu University (GU) was established in 2002.It is one of the eight public universities and degree-awarding institutions in Uganda. The main campus of Gulu University is located approximately 5 kilometres (3.1 mi), by road, northeast of downtown Gulu.
10. Ndejje University
Ndejje University was established in 1992 as a community oriented and a Christian based center for higher learning. The university offers a range of undergraduate, graduate as well as continuing career enhancement opportunities.
