Ambassador Perezi K. Kamunanwire  abruptly withdrew when he was told to explain why the Ugandan people where anti gay and also to pronounce himself on the matter.

The withdraw was sparked by a letter sent to Ambassador Perezi K. Kamunanwire  by the United Negro College Fund President and CEO Michael L. Lomax  saying UNCF supporters had expressed concern over an anti-homosexuality bill recently introduced in the Uganda Parliament.

It was reported on Friday that  an unnamed LGBT activist had asked two national gay rights groups and a human rights organization, TransAfrica, to ask the United Negro College Fund to withdraw its invitation to Perezi Kamunanwire, who was supposed to deliver the organization’s keynote Martin Luther King Jr. Day address.

“With the pending legislation there in Uganda, the death penalty for those found ‘guilty’ of being LGBTQ, I don’t think Ambassador Kamunanwire is the most appropriate speaker for Dr. King’s birthday,” said the LGBT resident, who asked not to be identified.

It was revealed that Ambassador Perezi K. Kamunanwire gave up the opportunity of speaking on this great occasion when he was asked in the letter that he will have to talk about gay issues during his speech.

Many people Uganda Picks have contacted expressed their support for Ambassador Perezi K. Kamunanwire and thanked him for not bowing to pressure from people who do not understand Ugandan and African cultures.

“I think Ambassador Perezi K. Kamunanwire is a real ambassador for Uganda and for our values, The US should understand that Ugandan values do not appreciate  such acts” said Grace Namukasa, a trader in Mukono.

Though western countries are pushing for the legalize of gay acts in African, many African countries are against homosexual and Lesbians who they think are social outcast.

Apart from Uganda Uganda, many African countries like Nigeria also have anti gay bills which are awaiting approval. In Sierra Leon, people recently strikes over what they called western interference by trying to use gay rights as a must in order for a country to qualify for financial Aid.

The UNCF said that the ambassador had been invited based on his educational and scholarly credentials.
