The Walk To Work Demonstration Taking Place in Kampala
Dr. Kizza Besigye, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president is walking to work today as he had promised to do last week as he was launching the Action for Change campaign in which prayers, conferences and peaceful demonstrations would be used as a way of showing discontent for the high inflation in the country and increasing standards of living right now.
Last week, FDC started with prayers on Friday. In every religion, prayers were held seeking mercy and protection from God during this trying time for most Ugandans as inflation increases there by increasing the standards of living.
Today, the public was urged to walk to work as a way of demonstrating against the high fuel prices. The transport system is stranded right now with people heading to the capital, Kampala facing hardships of taxis to transport them to their work destinations. People are indeed walking to work. It is being reported that business men and women are carrying their merchandise to their places of work.
Police warned against the demonstration despite having been informed in time about it. However, Judith Nabakooba, police spokesperson urged that the demonstrations be peaceful. Riot police however has been stationed in several places in the country so as to maintain law and order should there be any riotous situation.
Dr. Kizza Besigye is currently walking to work. Other prominent opposition members are also expected to walk to work. Among these are Mukono North MP, Betty Nambooze and Kampala Mayor, Erias Lukwago.
Right now, fuel prices are high with a litre of fuel having increased from sh2, 300 to sh4, 000. Transport costs have also increased which is crippling the businesses in Kampala and country at large. Food prices have also increased considerably with a loaf of bread increasing from sh2, 000 to sh3, 000 and many more.
