DP President Nobert Mao Walks to Work
Democratic Party (DP) president, Nobert Mao has joined Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) in walking to work to day as a way of demonstrating against the high fuel prices in the country.
Mao is walking from Ntinda to the city to go to work as part of the demonstrations by FDC. Last week, FDC launched the Action for Change campaign in which prayers, conferences and peaceful demonstrations would be held as a way of seeking change for the country today.
On Friday last week, prayers were held in all christian denominations and muslims held prayers in which they were seeking mercy from God for the situation in Uganda.
Mao was stopped from continuing his walk to work when he reached the centre of Ntinda where he was supposed to continue to Kampala city. Police restrained them to try and stop them from continuing the walk. The demonstration started peacefully till police intervened but they refused and continued walking.
Deputy police spokes person, Vincent Sekatte said the police was not informed about the demonstrations before. “If you are preparing such demonstrations, inform the police before hand. And do not hold them in busy places where people are, hold them in places which will not inconvenience the people.
However, yesterday, Inspector General of Police, Kale Kayihura said the opposition is insincere and wants to use a demonstration against high commodity prices as a guise to cause disruptions and topple a duly elected government. He said given their intentions, the demonstration called by FDC leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and other opposition members was unlawful and would not be allowed to take place.
While being restrained, Besigye urged the police not to get involved in the economics of the country. The police men told him to be of good example to the people and not to blame the government, a sign that the police supports the government, it is partisan.
